Have you noticed that you are much kinder to others than you are to yourself?
Why do you think that is?

From my personal experience, I find that I feel a vested interest in my own life and survival, even more than in another’s. This doesn’t mean I don’t care for others, but there’s a subconscious, innate need to ensure my own survival.

This survival instinct shows up in subtle ways, deeply permeating our sense of self. So much of our decisions, thoughts, and actions are rooted in the drive to survive.

Understanding Our Self-Judgment

This is why we can rip ourselves apart in the mirror, focusing on perceived flaws, yet observe these same “flaws” in others without a second thought. We are constantly zeroed in on ourselves, taking things personally. To our survival instincts, everything is a potential threat, and life must be controlled to keep us safe.

Judging ourselves has become a way to stay small, to stay safe. For our survival aspect, this is ideal. But for the dynamic part of us that longs to grow and evolve, this is BORING.

Living More Freely: Applying This Knowledge

Realize the Purpose of Negative Thoughts:
These thoughts are trying to keep you safe. Recognize them as messages, not as truths. Ask yourself, are you giving power to thoughts that diminish you, or are you reframing them lovingly into something empowering?

Understand That We Can’t See Ourselves Clearly:
We judge ourselves through a filter of past mistakes and guilt, veiling our beauty. We can see the beauty in others because we view them with fresh eyes.

Embrace Your Power of Choice:
When you’re unkind to yourself, pause. Realize you are the sole operant power in your life. It’s up to you to choose kindness, to take responsibility for your thoughts, and to treat yourself like the divine creation you are.
