Purpose finds you; you don’t find it. There is no “you†to find it. There is no separate entity living inside your head, bearing your name, figuring out the ins and outs of life. I know that using words like “your†and “you†implies a separate person making decisions, but life itself is quite spontaneous.
The happenings of life occur within a human body and beyond it. There is no separation between “you†and the air you breathe. You are breathing in yourself.
The Meaning of Purpose
What is purpose, then? You could say that life itself lives through the experience of YOU, expressing whatever it wishes in each moment. Purpose is simply what is. A person who feels separate may find solace in having a purpose—a great service to humanity. Yet, this suggests that humanity is somehow broken and needs fixing, and that you are the one to save the day.
But this belief can overshadow the spontaneity of each moment. Life is so perfect that it appears imperfect, filled with both darkness and light—hatred, love, greed, joy, and inspiration. This is freedom, the gift of clarity. Recognizing that everything is fleeting, beautifully neutral, allows us to see life’s true perfection.
Observing Thoughts and Feelings
Your thoughts, feelings, and beliefs are the only things seemingly hiding this perfection. You aren’t actually thinking these thoughts or feeling these feelings—they simply arise. Your power lies in the attention you give them, in whether you identify with them.
So, will you continue to give your power away to beLIEfs, or will you remain as the formless awareness within and behind these thoughts, feelings, and ideas?
Nothing needs fixing. Nothing needs changing. You are life’s purpose.
